Manual Lymphatic Drainage:

Certified from the Dr VODDER SCHOOL

The Lymphatic system is separate from the Arterial and Venous systems. Is responsible for producing & transporting the white cells (our defense cells) of the immune system. Is responsible for the transport of excess water, protein, dead cells, bacteria, viruses, inorganic substances, and wastes from the connective tissue back to the blood stream and ultimate removal by the kidneys.

MLD is actually a very soft, pleasant and relaxing type of massage,at the same time, it works deeply inside the body by stimulating the lymphatic vessels and nodes

Combined Decongestive Therapy--

Treatment of Primary Lymph Edema  (congenital)

Secondary Lymph edema (due to mastectomies and trauma etc..)

Bandaging

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

* Reduce Swelling

 * Decrease Pain

 * Promote Healing.

How does manual lymphatic drainage work?

MLD encourages the collection of a body fluid known as lymph. Lymph is present in the tissue throughout the body and its function is to carry nutrients to the cells and collect any waste, cell debris, bacteria and foreign material present in the tissue spaces

. The massage allows the lymph to flow more freely around the body, renewing and strengthening cells and tissues while allowing it to be cleansed as it passes through the lymph nodes. Any excess fluid  eventually to leaves the body via the kidneys.

Where the lymphatic system is insufficient, or the pathway is blocked, this can result in a build-up of fluid and a condition known as primary or secondary lymphedema may develop.

Specific MLD techniques are then used that allow the fluid to drain via a different route.

The medical benefits of Manual lymph drainage are highly regarded in Europe and USA. In the U.K. it is now becoming an accepted part of Complex Decongestive Therapy (CDT).

What happens in a MLD treatment?

In the first session I take a full medical history and discuss your condition with you. After making an assessment I explain how the treatment will progress, how many you will need and, if agreed, I will commence with a short treatment.

The massage is very gentle and soporific and is done in a warm, safe environment. Usually some clothes need be removed

During the transportation process, the lymph is cleaned filtered and concentrated. Many immune processes occur in the lymph nodes.

If the pathways become congested damaged blocked or severed then fluids can build up in the connected tissue causing edema and swelling. This can lead to abnormalities in the cells and tissues.  If any abnormalities present in the tissues ( i.e chronic inflammation, recent surgery, congestion)  then it is the role of the lymphatic system to transport the damaged cells inflammatory products and toxins away from the area.

MLD is a very light, rhythmical form of massage that is particularly effective in:

Lymph Disorders: lymphedema, swollen  feet and  legs, puffy eyes and face,  cellulite.

Blood Circulation: heavy and tired legs, varicose veins, spider veins. acne and other skin conditions Relieving swelling and fluid retention, for example swollen ankles and puffy eyes , sinus problems

Nervous System: stress, anxiety,    headaches, back, sleeping disorders. Tinnitus

Respiratory System: cold, flu, bronchitis, sinusitis. Sinus congestion

Digestive System: diarrhoea or constipation,   gas bloating, colitis, and stomach pains

Aches and Pains: Sinus headaches , tension and backpain.

Treatment &  maintenance

for migraines and Fibromyalgia,

Epicondylytis, Adhesive capsulitis,  Arthritic pain

PMS pains

Motor Vehicle accidents: Whiplash

Treatment of --Hematoma, Sprains & Strains, Inflammation,

Helping to heal injuries and reduce bruising

Improving scars and stretch marks and the general appearance of the skin

Reducing primary and secondary lymphedema, the latter sometimes --arising after surgery

Helping to detoxify the body and enhancing and cleansing the immune system

Cranio-Sacral Therapy

  Trained at the Upledger Institute

When was CranioSacral Therapy (CST) developed?    It was in 1970, during a neck surgery , that osteopathic physician John E. Upledger first observed the rhythmic movement of what would soon be identified as the craniosacral system. Curiosity piqued, he began searching for the answer and started with the research of Dr. William Sutherland, the father of cranial osteopathy who believed that the bones of the skull were structured to allow for movement. From 1975 to 1983 Dr Upledger served as Clinical Researcher and Professor of Biomechanics at Michigan State University, where he supervised a team of anatomists, physiologists, biophysicists and bioengineers in research and testing to scientifically confirm the existence of cranial bone motion.. The results not only confirmed Sutherland’s theory, but led to clarification of the mechanisms behind this motion — the craniosacral system. Dr. Upledger’s continued work in the field ultimately resulted in his development of CST.

How does CranioSacral Therapy work?

CST  works by helping the body's natural healing mechanisms dissipate the negative effects of stress on the central nervous system (CNS). This is accomplished through utilizing a physiological body system called the craniosacral system, which maintains the environment in which the CNS functions. It consists of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord, extending from the bones of the skull, face and mouth (which make up the cranium) down to the tailbone area (or sacrum). The role of this system in the development and performance of the brain and spinal cord is so vital, that an imbalance or dysfunction in it can cause sensory, motor and/or neurological disabilities. Like the pulse of the cardiovascular system, the craniosacral system has a rhythm that can be felt throughout the body. Using a touch generally no heavier than the weight of a 20 pence piece, skilled practitioners can monitor this rhythm at key body points to pinpoint the source of an obstruction or stress. Once a source has been determined, they can assist the natural movement of the fluid and related soft tissue to help the body self-correct. This simple action is often all it takes to remove a restriction. Other times, CST may be combined with other complementary therapies to help restore the body to its optimum functioning level.

What conditions can CST  help?     Due to its influence on the functioning of the CNS, CST can benefit the body in a number of ways — from bolstering overall health and resistance to disease to alleviating a wide range of specific medical conditions.   CST's largest patient groups are those suffering chronic symptoms that haven't been aided by other approaches. In particular, CST is beneficial to those with head, neck or back injuries resulting from an accident — be it from a car, sports or work mishap or from a fall. extremely light touch involved in the application of CST makes it a safe approach as well for children, infants and newborns with early traumas, including birth trauma. They especially can benefit from the timely identification and release of restrictions in the craniosacral system, hence preventing future difficulties such as learning disabilities or hyperactivity. Another area of principal efficacy is with stress-related dysfunctions.

Contraindications of CST;  In  certain cases where CST is not  recommended. These include conditions where a variation and/or slight increase in intracranial pressure would cause instability. Acute aneurysm, cerebral hemorrhage or other pre-existing severe bleeding disorders are examples of conditions that could be affected by small intracranial pressure changes.

CST  works to reverse the debilitating effects of stress by providing conditions in which the nervous system can rest and rejuvenate. In fact, it's this capacity to reduce stress that's leading an increasing number of people to include CST as part of their wellness routines.

Many back problems and trapped nerves are due to relatively minor adhesions in the soft tissues of the digestive system; which pull on the spine. If you have to have regular adjustments to keep your spine aligned, then it's a good bet that you either have minor abdominal adhesions or minor imbalances in the tension of muscles in the floor of your mouth. Surgical scars anywhere on the body have a similar effect. All of these can often be corrected quite painlessly and quickly using CST techniques - even in the case of mesh-strengthened hernia operation scar tissue.

Minor, easily correctable cranial lesions can also cause "permanent" spinal misalignments, because all the weight of the head then pushes down the spine at

an angle.
